You
know your character is really integral to the plot of a film when
your character's name essentially describes the entirety of what
you do on camera (e.g. Guy Who Falls in Hole, etc...) Thus is often
the case with Mike Gregoire, our only full time extra. We've
utilized many people - actor's friends who drove them to the shoot,
Pat's little brother's friends, a person who just happens to be
there - for extras, but Mike is the only person we've used a lot.
Why is this? Do we love him as an extra? Not exactly. He's
just really, really bad at acting and he's one of our friends. So
he's often at the shoots helping out when we realize we've never
bothered to cast someone for one of our frequent "worthless
roles.”
"Get Mike!"
"But he stinks."
"Whatever, this character doesn't even have a line."
Mike obtained his first part
(the much coveted Trashcan Kicking Student role) in Murder Made
Easy because the
segment wasn't even in the script. We were shooting at the high school
and decided the movie couldn't possibly go on unless we had someone
kick a trashcan down the hall. Who should do it? Should we just dress
one of ourselves up and do it? Naw. Should we just ask
some random kid in the hall? Hmmm, no one in the hall... that's
'cause class is in session. Who do we still know that's in high school?
"Gregoire!" Nick shouts as he runs off to find him, apparently
knowing that he'll be in debate class. And the rest is history.
